Scalp Care 101: A Simple Routine for a Fresher Scalp & Better-Looking Volume

A fresher scalp can make hair look lighter and fuller at the roots—but scalp care is not the same as treating hair loss.

Wash the Scalp, Not Just the Hair

Work shampoo into the scalp with your fingertips and let the lather move through the lengths as you rinse. You do not need to scratch hard or use very hot water.

Keep Heavy Products Off the Roots

Conditioners, masks and oils usually work best on the mid-lengths and ends unless the product specifically says it is designed for the scalp. Heavy buildup near the roots can make volume collapse faster.

Exfoliation Is Optional

Scalp scrubs and exfoliating tonics can feel refreshing, but they are not mandatory. If you use one, introduce it gradually and stop if it causes burning, excessive dryness or more flaking.

For Better-Looking Volume

Focus on clean roots, lighter styling products and drying technique. Lifting the roots while blow-drying can create immediate cosmetic volume without claiming to change the number of hairs on your scalp.

Know When Skincare Is Not Enough

Persistent itching, sores, severe flaking or noticeable hair shedding deserves proper evaluation. A beauty product should not be used to delay care for a scalp condition.
